Model United Nations (MUN) is an opportunity for our MYP students to develop their leadership skills, thorough debating world politics, economic issues, human rights, technological development, environment issues as well as addressing global security problems. Furthermore, the students have the chance to meet with other students, establishing friendships beyond the two or three days of the debate.
Over the weekend, a selection of our M1-3 students attended Nanjing Junior MUN. The main theme was ‘The impact of the development of technology and their ethics’, with MUN delegates approaching the topic within different committees. It allowed our students to have the opportunity to make an opening speech, debate issues whilst respecting the opinions of others, lobbying, merging, amending resolutions, and working together to pass resolutions. Our students worked hard, initially completing a draft, to finally creating their resolutions. Please see the students comments for more information.

Junior MUN comments
Isabell Hu M1, General Assembly 1 committee delegate of New Zealand, “The ethics of non-human guided transport”
“I enjoyed doing MUN because I was able to meet other delegates and learn how to write a speech and say it. I also learned how you can merge your resolutions and I got a chance to see how you present and defend your speech”.
Leonie Schueler M1, General Assembly 1 committee delegate of New Zealand, “The ethics of non-human guided transport”
“I enjoyed being part of the 2014 Model United Nations and being able to meet other delegates. The best thing of all was combining my resolution with delegates to make a perfect resolution. I was surprised when our resolution passed without a negative comment because the delegate and I were both doing this for the first time”.
Ruoming Xin (Jessica) M2, General Assembly 2 committee delegate of New Zealand, “Issues concerning the development of new drugs and increased drug resistance”
“Although it was already my second time attending the NISMUN 2014 conference, I felt very nervous preparing for it. However, as soon as I arrived at NIS I felt all my worries and nervousness wash away....being back at NIS for the second time felt like meeting an old friend! Not everyone has a chance to go to an MUN conference and so I'd like to thank Mr. Parfait, Ms. Suzanne, all the delegates I made friends with and lastly 6 amazing friends that went with me who made the trip the best so far”
Jeeyeoun Chae M2, General Assembly 3 committee delegate of New Zealand, “Issues concerning nano-surgery and personalized medicine”
“I really enjoyed the Nanjing MUN. The fellow delegates were very nice to each other and the chairs encouraged everyone to come forward and to speak up. When I started to debate at first, I was extremely nervous and I couldn't speak much. However, in the second session, I got a lot of help from the United Kingdom delegate. I was very happy to meet very nice people and we shared our contacts so we can keep in touch. During the debate, lobbying and merging process, we were able to share our ideas freely and I learned a tremendous amount."
After all the debates had finished, we did the fun debates. The topics of fun debates were "DC comic vs. Marvel comic" and "Miley Cyrus vs. Justin Bieber". We all laughed a lot and had a fantastic time whilst completing the funny debates. Some of delegates were the chair and the chair became the delegate during the "DC comic vs. Marvel comic" debate.
For me, as a first time MUN participant, it really was an unforgettable experience and I am inspired by this MUN trip.”
David Jeon M3, Environmental committee delegate of Togo, “The question of the right to and safety of mining the ocean floor ”
Bradley Ogilvie M3, ECOSOC committee delegate of Togo, “The question of the regulation of virtual currencies (such as the Bit Coin) ”
Amber Tay M2, Human rights committee delegate of Togo, “The right of public access to human enhancements.”
“When I first came to MUN, I felt nervous and wary, as I did not know what to expect. But as I got to know the Chairs and delegates, I enjoyed being as they're very nice once you get to know them”.
The school is currently trialling the program ‘Class Dojo’ to allow staff to monitor and assess student progress against the Learner Profile. Teachers award students points for completing actions that demonstrate the Learner Profile, allowing us to log the areas they are strong in. We are also using the program to monitor behaviour by logging issues, such as incomplete homework. This program allows all teachers to view the class as a whole, and parents the opportunity to view their own child’s individualised reports. This will facilitate and support the development of the Learner Profile throughout our community. Please speak to your child about how Class Dojo is being used, if you’d like any further information.
On Tuesday 25th of February some of the PTA visited the Chinese School - Wuxi Chongan Special School (崇安区辅读学校) a school for children with special needs. We had collected some unwanted clothes and toys that we hope will be some use to the children and we delivered this to the school on this day. We had also collected some money from the parents of our school and we bought each child a gift that they can take home. Each child received a basic English reading book.
We were greeted on Tuesday by the whole school and we were treated to an assembly of performances by the children. We were made to feel like very special visitors.
We hope to continue the relationship between the school and TIS so that we can continue supporting the children.

This year Wuxi Idol will be held Friday March 14th, 2014. If you would like to participate please fill in and return the sign up sheet that was sent home. You can also speak directly with Mr. Sein or Ms. Wakefield, or you can speak with a Student Council Representative.
We are excited to see the many talents floating around TIS. If you're not sure what your talent could be, here are a few ideas: singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, telling a joke, juggling, doing a magic trick or card trick...and the list goes on and on.
If you're feeling nervous about sharing your talent with the entire school, think of this as a great opportunity to display what it means to be a risk taker! We truly hope you consider joining the show and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Goodbye to Mr Saunders
After eight long years working at Taihu, today we said goodbye to Mr Saunders. We wish him the best of luck at his new school.
Here is a message from him:
I would like to thank all parents, students and staff for your amazing generosity and kindness. I had eight years with Taihu and guided the school through many difficult times but ultimately we all worked together to make the fabulous school we have today. The most important memory I will take with me is of the students. I taught nearly every student in the school and enjoyed every minute of it. I wish you all the best for the future and am confident the school will continue to grow under the leadership of Mr Moniz and Mr Ahmed.
태호 학교에서 8년 동안의 근무를 끝으로 오늘 우리는 Mr. Saunders에게 인사를 전했습니다. 그의 새 학교 생활에 행운이 가득하기를 축복합니다.
Mr Allen and Mr Habarugira will be away for IB training from Thursday 6th March to Monday 10th March.
What Taihu can offer you...
